Volunteering Opportunities Using SG Cares portal Volunteer Leader (VL) Volunteer Host Organisation (VHO)
Volunteering Opportunities
1. What volunteer activities does SG Cares offer? SG Cares aims to be the first stop for all kinds of episodic volunteering opportunities in Singapore. Activities will serve the elderly, disabled, environment and the arts, among many other different causes in the community. There’ll be an activity to interest every volunteer. 2. What is episodic volunteering? An episodic volunteer serves in an activity for a few hours at a time, that is, a short episode versus continuous volunteering on a fixed schedule. For example, playing simple games with the elderly or cleaning a public park. Such activities may recur yet engage a different volunteer group for each session. This allows the episodic volunteer to sign up for an activity only once and move on to another activity. 3. Do I need any special skills to volunteer? No, special skills requiring intensive training are not required. 4. Can I volunteer for any activity? Yes, you can choose any activity you are interested in. 5. How much time do I have to commit? SG Cares offers activities which typically range from 2 to 4 hours. You choose which activity best suits your interest and how much time you have to give. 6. Are there any age limits for volunteers? People of all ages can volunteer - there is something for everyone. Youth aged 13 to 16 require parental consent before signing up for activities. Those aged 12 and below also require parental consent before signing up for activities and must be accompanied by an adult during the activity. Parents who have signed up for an activity and wish to bring their children along should consult their Volunteer Leader on the feasibility of this. 7. Why do new volunteers need to attend the orientation? The orientation serves to familiarise new volunteers with the work and expectations of a volunteer before they sign up for any activity. 8. When and where will the orientation sessions be held? Please click here to view the orientation sessions in the SG Cares calendar. The sessions will be held at the National Volunteer & Philanthropy Centre where SG Cares is located. 9. Can I volunteer for any activity without attending an orientation? Yes, you can. However, this is only allowed for your first activity through the invitation of an existing SG Cares volunteer and where both of you would be volunteering in the same activity. To continue to participate in future activities, you would need to first attend the volunteer orientation. 10. Can I volunteer with my family or friends? How do I do so? Yes, you can. Once you sign up as a volunteer and attend the orientation, you can sign up for an activity and then invite your family and friends to join you. You do all this through the portal. 14. How do I become a volunteer leader?
You must be a SG Cares member who has volunteered three or more times a year and recommended by a VL. VL candidates will be interviewed by SG Cares in person or over the telephone and must attend VL training. 15. What kind of volunteering experience must I have to lead an activity? You should have previously participated in the activity you are interested to lead in, be very familiar with the activity and the VHO as well as confident to lead and manage the volunteers. 16. How many projects is a volunteer leader expected to lead in a month or a year? We encourage each volunteer leader to adopt an activity and lead it for three consecutive months (on average once or twice a month) or lead four or more activities a year. Besides leading the activity, you would also be performing administrative duties.
